Thomas Clifford (1st Baron Clifford)
Thomas Clifford, 1st Baron Clifford of Chudleigh (1630–1677), was an English nobleman and politician during the 17th century. Initially a supporter of King Charles I during the English Civil War, he later became a prominent figure under King Charles II. Clifford held several important positions, including Treasurer of the Navy. He was known for his role in the secret negotiations of the Treaty of Dover, which allied England with France against the Dutch. Despite his influential career, he faced criticism for his Catholic faith in a predominantly Protestant England, complicating his political legacy.
