The Royalist Cause

The Royalist Cause refers to the support for the monarchy during conflicts such as the English Civil War (1642-1651) when royalists backed King Charles I against Parliament. Royalists believed in the king's divine right to rule and opposed what they saw as Parliament's challenge to his authority. They consisted of nobles, clergy, and loyal citizens who valued tradition and social hierarchy. The cause ultimately lost to the Parliamentarians, leading to the temporary abolition of the monarchy and the establishment of the Commonwealth under Oliver Cromwell. Royalist ideals have influenced political thought regarding governance and authority throughout history.
