Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN)
The Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) is a Mexican revolutionary leftist group that emerged in the Chiapas region in 1994, known for its indigenous rights advocacy and opposition to neoliberal economic policies. Inspired by the principles of Emiliano Zapata, a revolutionary leader, the EZLN uses a mix of armed resistance and peaceful activism to promote democracy, land reform, and social justice. The group gained global attention during their January 1, 1994, uprising, coinciding with the implementation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which they argued would harm Mexico's rural communities. Today, they continue to promote autonomy and indigenous rights.
