Zapatistas

The Zapatistas are a revolutionary movement in Mexico that emerged in 1994, primarily representing the indigenous population of Chiapas. They are named after Emiliano Zapata, a leader in the Mexican Revolution advocating for land reform. The movement gained global attention with their uprising on January 1, 1994, protesting against neoliberal economic policies and advocating for social justice, indigenous rights, and democratic reforms. Led by the charismatic figure Subcomandante Marcos, the Zapatistas emphasize grassroots governance and have created autonomous communities, prioritizing sustainability and local decision-making over state control, while challenging systemic inequalities in Mexico.
