San Andrés Accords
The San Andrés Accords are a series of agreements made in 1996 between the Mexican government and the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) following the Chiapas uprising. The accords aimed to address indigenous rights and social justice, recognizing the need for reforms in land use, political representation, and health and education services for indigenous communities. Although the accords received initial support, many of their promised reforms were not fully implemented, leading to ongoing tensions and discussions about indigenous rights in Mexico. The agreements symbolize a broader struggle for equality and recognition within the country.
