Acteal
Acteal refers to a tragic event that took place on December 22, 1997, in the small village of Acteal, Mexico. During a conflict related to indigenous rights and political tensions, a paramilitary group attacked a group of predominantly indigenous people who were gathered for a prayer meeting, resulting in the deaths of 45 individuals, including women and children. This massacre highlighted ongoing issues of social injustice, land disputes, and violence in Chiapas, a region marked by poverty and conflict. It remains a poignant reminder of the struggle for human rights and recognition of indigenous communities in Mexico.
