Las Abejas
Las Abejas is a nonviolent civil organization formed in 1992 in Chiapas, Mexico, primarily composed of indigenous Tzotzil Maya members. Its name translates to "The Bees," symbolizing cooperation and community work. The group advocates for human rights, social justice, and peace, particularly in response to government violence and neglect following the Zapatista uprising. Las Abejas gained international attention after the 1997 Acteal Massacre, where 45 members were killed. The organization continues to focus on advocacy, promoting indigenous rights, and healing within their community while emphasizing nonviolent resistance and solidarity.
