Zapatista uprising

The Zapatista uprising began on January 1, 1994, when the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN) launched an armed revolt in Chiapas, Mexico. Led by Subcomandante Marcos, the movement aimed to address issues like poverty, land rights, and indigenous rights, opposing the effects of globalization and neoliberal policies. The uprising coincided with the implementation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), which many believed would worsen economic inequalities. The Zapatistas advocated for autonomy and self-determination, drawing global attention to indigenous struggles. The rebellion transformed into a strong social movement emphasizing democracy, social justice, and cultural rights.
