Zapatista Communities
Zapatista Communities are autonomous indigenous groups in Chiapas, Mexico, primarily led by the Zapatista Army of National Liberation (EZLN). They advocate for indigenous rights, social justice, and local self-governance, often operating outside the Mexican government’s control. These communities emphasize communal land ownership, cultural preservation, and participatory decision-making. Since their uprising in 1994, they have gained international recognition for resisting exploitation and promoting grassroots democracy. Their approach combines traditional indigenous values with modern activism, creating a unique model of autonomous governance focused on equality and environmental sustainability.
