Thebes

Thebes was an ancient city located in Greece, known for its powerful influence during the classical period. It played a crucial role in Greek history, especially in the 4th century BCE when it briefly overshadowed Athens and Sparta. Thebes is famous for the legendary warrior Cadmus and the myth of Oedipus. It also housed the sacred site of the Sanctuary of Apollo. The city's military prowess was exemplified by the Sacred Band, an elite military unit. Thebes ultimately declined after its defeat by Macedonia at the Battle of Chaeronea in 338 BCE, marking the end of its prominence in Greece.
