Thebes (Ancient Greece)

Thebes was a powerful city-state in ancient Greece, known for its rivalry with Athens and Sparta. Located in Boeotia, it played a critical role in Greek history, especially during the 4th century BCE. Thebes is famous for its military prowess and the Sacred Band, an elite fighting unit. It was also the birthplace of notable figures like the poet Pindar and the general Epaminondas, who reformed its army. Thebes ultimately declined after losing at the Battle of Chaeronea in 338 BCE, but its cultural and political influence was significant in shaping ancient Greek civilization.
