Epaminondas was a renowned ancient Greek general and statesman from Thebes, famous for transforming Greek warfare and politics. He innovated military tactics, such as using an advanced formation called the oblique phalanx, which concentrated forces on one side to outflank enemies. Epaminondas led Thebes to notable victories against Sparta, challenging their dominance in Greece. He also helped liberate other Greek city-states from Spartan control. Beyond his military skill, he sought to unify Greece, promoting alliances and stability. His leadership significantly boosted Thebes’ power and influence during the early 4th century BCE.
