Stadtholder

A Stadtholder was a high-ranking official in the Netherlands, particularly during the 16th to 18th centuries. Acting as a governor or representative, the Stadtholder was often responsible for military leadership and the administration of the provinces. While the position could be powerful, its authority varied, especially during times of conflict between republicanism and monarchy. The most famous Stadtholders belonged to the House of Orange, who played significant roles in Dutch politics and military affairs, influencing the country's direction and governance during the tumultuous periods of the Dutch Republic.
