Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) is a designation used in the European Union to recognize products that are tied to a specific geographical area, highlighting their unique qualities derived from that location. For instance, a cheese that can only be made in a certain region using traditional methods may be granted PGI status. This label helps protect the product’s reputation, ensures authenticity, and supports local economies by preventing misuse or imitation of the name. PGI is part of a broader system that includes other protections like Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) and Traditional Specialities Guaranteed (TSG).
