Peace of Nicias
The Peace of Nicias, established in 421 BCE during the Peloponnesian War between Athens and Sparta, was a temporary truce intended to halt hostilities after years of conflict. Named after the Athenian general Nicias, it sought to restore stability through a ceasefire and the return of prisoners. Despite its initial success, the peace was fragile, as tensions remained high and underlying issues unresolved. Ultimately, the truce fell apart, leading to renewed warfare, highlighting the challenges of achieving lasting peace in the face of deep-seated rivalries and ambitions among the city-states of ancient Greece.
