Oncoviruses

Oncoviruses are a type of virus that can cause cancer in humans or animals. They may alter the DNA in host cells, leading to uncontrolled cell growth, which is a hallmark of cancer. Some well-known oncoviruses include human papillomavirus (HPV), which is linked to cervical cancer, and hepatitis B and C viruses, associated with liver cancer. Not all viruses cause cancer, but oncoviruses have been identified as significant contributors to the development of certain types of tumors. Understanding these viruses helps in cancer prevention and treatment efforts.
