Kaposi's Sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV)

Kaposi's Sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV), also known as human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8), is a virus linked to the development of Kaposi's sarcoma, a type of cancer that forms purple or red skin tumors. The virus can infect cells and sometimes remains dormant, especially in healthy individuals with strong immune systems. However, in people with weakened immunity, such as those with HIV/AIDS, KSHV can become active and promote abnormal cell growth. While most infected people don't develop symptoms, in certain conditions, the virus can contribute to tumor formation and other related cancers or diseases.
