Millet System
The Millet System was an administrative practice used in the Ottoman Empire that allowed various religious and ethnic communities, known as "millets," to govern themselves in certain areas, particularly in matters of personal law, such as marriage, education, and religion. Each millet operated under its own laws and leaders while still being subject to the overarching authority of the Ottoman state. This system promoted a degree of autonomy and coexistence among diverse groups, helping to maintain social stability within the empire by recognizing and respecting cultural differences.
