glycogenesis
Glycogenesis is the process by which the body converts excess glucose (a type of sugar) into glycogen, a stored form of energy. When we eat carbohydrates, our blood sugar levels rise. Insulin, a hormone, helps signal our cells to absorb glucose. If there is more glucose than the body needs for immediate energy, it is transformed into glycogen and stored mainly in the liver and muscles. This stored glycogen can be later broken down into glucose when the body needs energy, especially during exercise or between meals.
