Cognitive control
Cognitive control, often referred to as executive function, is the mental process that helps us manage our thoughts, focus our attention, and regulate our behaviors. It enables us to stay on task, make decisions, solve problems, and adapt our actions based on changing circumstances. For example, when you concentrate while studying despite distractions, or when you plan a project by breaking it into steps, you’re using cognitive control. This ability is crucial for achieving goals and navigating everyday challenges, balancing impulses, and maintaining emotional responses effectively.
