Territorial Sea
The territorial sea is a belt of coastal water extending up to 12 nautical miles (about 22 kilometers) from a country’s shoreline. Within this area, the country has sovereignty, meaning it can enforce laws, regulate resources, and control maritime activities. However, other nations have the right to innocent passage through these waters, allowing ships to sail without interference, as long as they don’t threaten peace or security. The territorial sea is important for national security, resource management, and protecting marine ecosystems.
