Seanad Éireann

Seanad Éireann, commonly referred to as the Seanad, is the upper house of the Oireachtas, Ireland's parliament. It plays a crucial role in reviewing legislation proposed by the lower house, Dáil Éireann. Members of the Seanad are not elected in a general vote; instead, they are appointed, elected by local councils, or nominated by the Prime Minister (Taoiseach). This structure allows for a diverse range of expertise and opinions. The Seanad can suggest amendments to laws but does not have the same power as the Dáil to ultimately block legislation. Its functions include debate, scrutiny, and providing checks on government actions.
