Scandinavian Union
The Scandinavian Union, also known as the Kalmar Union, was a historical alliance formed in 1397 that united the kingdoms of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden under a single monarch. This union aimed to strengthen the three countries against foreign threats and promote trade and cooperation. However, it faced internal conflicts and power struggles, particularly regarding Swedish independence. The union effectively ended in the early 16th century, with Sweden asserting its independence in 1523, while Denmark and Norway remained united until 1814. The union is significant in Nordic history for its impact on national identities and regional relations.
