Union of Kalmar

The Union of Kalmar was a political agreement established in 1397 that united the three kingdoms of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden under a single monarch, Eric of Pomerania. This union aimed to strengthen the Nordic countries against external threats and unify their resources. However, it faced challenges, including resistance from Swedish nobles and internal conflicts, leading to its gradual disintegration. By the early 16th century, Sweden effectively broke away from the union, while Denmark and Norway remained united until 1814. The union is a significant historical example of attempts to create regional cooperation in Northern Europe.
