Rump Parliament
The Rump Parliament refers to the English Parliament that remained after the Pride's Purge in 1648, when Oliver Cromwell's troops removed members who opposed the trial of King Charles I. This smaller group, mostly Puritan and supportive of the military, took significant steps toward establishing a republican government. They abolished the monarchy and the House of Lords, proclaiming England a Commonwealth. The Rump Parliament lasted until 1653, when it was dissolved by Cromwell, who later established a Protectorate. The period is marked by radical political changes and conflicts over governance in England.
