Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples
The Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples (RCAP) was established in Canada in 1991 to address the historical and ongoing issues faced by First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples. The commission aimed to investigate the impacts of colonization, policy failures, and social injustices, and to provide recommendations for reconciliation and self-determination. Over four years, it conducted extensive consultations across the country and released a final report in 1996, highlighting the need for meaningful change in relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Canadians, emphasizing issues like land rights, governance, and social welfare.
