Status Indians

"Status Indians" are Indigenous people in Canada who are registered under the Indian Act, a federal law. This registration grants certain rights and benefits, such as access to healthcare, education, and housing on reserves. However, not all Indigenous peoples have Status; for example, Métis and Inuit populations are generally excluded. The classification has historically been used to define and regulate Indigenous identity, often causing social and legal distinctions within Indigenous communities. The concept remains a key aspect of Canada's relationships with First Nations peoples.
