Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis
Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis (PSC) is a chronic disease that affects the liver and bile ducts, which transport bile from the liver to the intestines. In PSC, the bile ducts become inflamed and damaged, leading to scarring (sclerosis) and narrowing. This can cause bile to build up in the liver, potentially leading to liver damage and other complications. PSC is often associated with inflammatory bowel diseases like ulcerative colitis. Symptoms may include fatigue, itching, and jaundice. Currently, there is no cure, but treatments focus on managing symptoms and complications. Regular monitoring is essential for affected individuals.
