Marriage Gift (Mahr)

Mahr, or marriage gift, is a mandatory payment or gift from the groom to the bride in Islamic marriages. It symbolizes respect and commitment, serving as the bride's financial security. The amount and form can vary widely—ranging from money, property, or jewelry—and should be agreed upon by both parties before the marriage. Mahr is not meant to be a burden but rather a thoughtful provision emphasizing the groom's responsibility. In case of divorce, the bride retains her Mahr, further reinforcing her rights within the marriage.
