Maria II of Portugal was a queen who reigned during the 19th century, from 1834 to 1853, with a brief interruption. Born in 1819, she became queen at a young age after her father, King John VI, was overthrown. Her rule was marked by political turmoil, including conflicts between liberals and conservatives. Maria II was known for her efforts to modernize Portugal and establish a constitutional monarchy. She married twice, and her reign ended with her death in childbirth in 1853. She is often remembered for her role in stabilizing the country during a turbulent period.
