Miguelists
Miguelists were supporters of King Miguel I of Portugal, who reigned from 1828 to 1834. They believed in strict royal authority and traditional monarchy, opposing liberal reforms aimed at increasing parliamentary power and promoting civil liberties. Their movement arose during a political conflict between those favoring a constitutional monarchy (liberals) and those supporting a more absolute monarchy (conceived as Miguel’s position). The Miguelists played a significant role in the Portuguese Civil War (also called the Liberal Wars), ultimately leading to Miguel’s exile and the establishment of a constitutional monarchy in Portugal.
