JET (Joint European Torus)
The Joint European Torus (JET) is a major fusion research facility located in the UK. It’s designed to explore nuclear fusion, the process that powers the sun and stars, aiming to create a clean and virtually limitless energy source. JET uses powerful magnetic fields to confine superheated plasma, the fourth state of matter, in a doughnut-shaped vessel. Researchers study how to sustain fusion reactions and manage the extreme conditions required. Findings from JET contribute to the development of future fusion reactors, like ITER, which aim to bring fusion energy closer to practical use for electricity generation.
