Hospitallers
The Hospitallers, formally known as the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, began in the 11th century as a group providing care for sick pilgrims in the Holy Land. Over time, they evolved into a military-religious order, fighting in the Crusades and defending Christian territories. Known for their hospitality and medical care, they established hospitals and settlements. The Hospitallers became influential across Europe, particularly in the Mediterranean, and still exist today as a charitable organization, focusing on health care and humanitarian aid. Their legacy includes the well-known Knights Hospitaller and the iconic Maltese cross.
