Diabetic Ketoacidosis
Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) is a serious complication of diabetes that occurs when the body starts breaking down fat for energy instead of sugar due to a lack of insulin. This process produces ketones, which can build up in the blood and lead to a dangerous acid imbalance. Symptoms include excessive thirst, frequent urination, nausea, abdominal pain, weakness, and confusion. DKA often occurs in people with Type 1 diabetes but can also affect those with Type 2, especially during illness or stress. It requires urgent medical treatment to restore proper blood chemistry and prevent complications.
