Cheka

The Cheka was the first secret police organization in Soviet Russia, established in December 1917 following the Bolshevik Revolution. Its primary purpose was to identify and suppress counter-revolutionary activities and perceived threats to the new communist government. The Cheka operated with broad powers, including arrest and execution, often employing extreme measures. It played a significant role in maintaining the Soviet regime during the Civil War period, and its legacy includes the establishment of later security agencies. Over time, the Cheka evolved into the GPU and then the NKVD, which were central to state security in the USSR.
