Amniocentesis
Amniocentesis is a medical procedure used during pregnancy to collect a small sample of amniotic fluid that surrounds the fetus. This fluid contains cells from the baby, which can be tested for genetic conditions, chromosomal disorders, and certain infections. The procedure is usually done between the 15th and 20th week of pregnancy and involves inserting a thin needle through the abdomen into the uterus, guided by ultrasound to ensure safety. While it provides valuable information, it carries a small risk of complications, such as miscarriage, so it's typically offered when there are concerns about the baby's health.
