Chorionic Villus Sampling

Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS) is a prenatal test that collects small cells from the placenta to check for genetic conditions and chromosomal abnormalities in the fetus. Performed typically between 10 and 13 weeks of pregnancy, it involves inserting a thin tube or needle through the abdomen or cervix under ultrasound guidance. The cells collected are analyzed in a lab to identify issues such as Down syndrome or other genetic disorders. CVS provides early results, allowing parents and healthcare providers to make informed decisions about the pregnancy. While generally safe, it carries some risks, including miscarriage.
