Trisomy 21
Trisomy 21, also known as Down syndrome, is a genetic condition caused by the presence of an extra 21st chromosome. Instead of the usual two copies, individuals with Trisomy 21 have three. This extra genetic material affects physical and intellectual development, leading to characteristics such as distinct facial features, developmental delays, and a higher risk of certain health issues. While people with Down syndrome may face challenges, many lead fulfilling lives, engage in education and employment, and contribute meaningfully to their communities. Early intervention and support services can significantly enhance their development and quality of life.
