Aligarh Movement
The Aligarh Movement was a late 19th-century initiative in British India, primarily led by Sir Syed Ahmad Khan. Its main aim was to modernize Muslim education and promote social reform among Muslims. Inspired by Western ideas, it emphasized the importance of science, rational thinking, and English education. The movement established the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College in Aligarh in 1875, which later became Aligarh Muslim University. It sought to uplift the Muslim community through education, encourage coexistence with other communities, and address social and political challenges posed by British rule and colonial policies.
