
Afonso de Albuquerque
Afonso de Albuquerque (1453–1515) was a Portuguese general and admiral known for his significant role in establishing Portuguese colonial dominance in India and the Indian Ocean. As a key figure in the Age of Discovery, he led successful military campaigns, capturing important coastal cities like Goa and Malacca. Albuquerque aimed to control trade routes and spread Christianity, which helped expand Portugal's influence. His strategies combined military strength with diplomacy and he laid the groundwork for the Portuguese Empire, solidifying its presence in Asia during the 16th century. He is often regarded as one of the greatest maritime leaders of his time.
