Afghanistan conflict
The Afghanistan conflict, beginning in the late 1970s, involves decades of war and political turmoil. It started with the Soviet invasion in 1979, leading to resistance from Afghan mujahideen fighters. After the Soviet withdrawal in 1989, Afghanistan plunged into civil war, with the Taliban emerging in the 1990s, imposing strict Islamic law. Following the September 11, 2001 attacks, the U.S. led an invasion to dismantle al-Qaeda and the Taliban. This initiated a prolonged conflict involving efforts to establish a stable government, combat terrorism, and rebuild the nation, culminating in the Taliban's return to power in 2021 after the U.S. withdrawal.
