The Forty-five
The 'Forty-Five' refers to the Jacobite uprising of 1745 in Britain, led by Charles Edward Stuart, also known as "Bonnie Prince Charlie." He sought to reclaim the British throne for his father, James Francis Edward Stuart. The rebellion began in Scotland and aimed to restore the Stuart dynasty, which had been deposed in 1688. Initially gaining support and victories, the movement ultimately faltered, culminating in the disastrous Battle of Culloden in 1746. The defeat significantly weakened the Jacobite cause and marked a turning point in Scottish history, leading to harsh suppression of Highland culture and governance.
