The 45 (Jacobite Rising of 1745)
The Jacobite Rising of 1745, often called "The 45," was an uprising aimed at restoring the Stuart monarchy to the British throne. Led by Charles Edward Stuart, known as "Bonnie Prince Charlie," it sought to reclaim power for his father, James Francis Edward Stuart. The movement gained significant support in Scotland but faced resistance from the British government. The rebellion peaked with a victory at the Battle of Prestonpans but ultimately faltered after a defeat at the Battle of Culloden in 1746. This defeat marked the end of the Jacobite cause, leading to harsh reprisals against Scottish clans.
