The First World War

The First World War, also known as World War I, lasted from 1914 to 1918 and involved many of the world's great powers, divided into two main alliances: the Allies and the Central Powers. The war was triggered by the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary. It was marked by trench warfare, significant loss of life, and new military technology. The war ended with the Treaty of Versailles in 1919, which imposed heavy penalties on Germany. The conflict reshaped borders, economies, and societies, setting the stage for significant political changes and conflicts in the 20th century.
