Battle of Gallipoli

The Battle of Gallipoli, fought during World War I between 1915 and 1916, was an Allied campaign aimed at securing a sea route to Russia and weakening the Ottoman Empire. Allied forces, including British, Australian, and New Zealand troops, launched an invasion on the Gallipoli Peninsula. However, they faced strong Ottoman resistance under General Mustafa Kemal (later known as Atatürk). The campaign resulted in heavy casualties and ultimately failed, leading to a retreat. The battle is significant for its impact on national identities in Australia and New Zealand, commemorated annually on Anzac Day.
