Ramón Emeterio Betances

Ramón Emeterio Betances (1827-1898) was a prominent Puerto Rican physician, abolitionist, and revolutionary. He is often regarded as a key figure in Puerto Rican nationalism. Betances advocated for the independence of Puerto Rico from Spanish colonial rule and was a strong opponent of slavery, working towards its abolition. He organized several uprisings against Spanish authority and contributed significantly to the social and political changes in the region. His vision encompassed not only Puerto Rico's independence but also social justice and the empowerment of marginalized communities.
