Grito de Lares

The Grito de Lares was a significant uprising in 1868, where Puerto Ricans sought independence from Spanish rule. Taking place in Lares, the revolt was driven by frustrations over political repression, economic hardship, and cultural suppression under Spain. Although it was quickly suppressed, it became a symbol of Puerto Rican resistance and a milestone in the island's quest for autonomy. The movement inspired future efforts toward self-governance, and April 23—commemorating the rebellion—is celebrated as Puerto Rican Independence Day. The Grito de Lares remains an enduring symbol of national identity and the desire for freedom.
