
El Grito de Lares
El Grito de Lares was a significant uprising that occurred on September 23, 1868, in Puerto Rico against Spanish colonial rule. Fueled by discontent over social injustices and the desire for independence, a group of Puerto Rican revolutionaries, led by figures like Ramón Emeterio Betances and Juan Antonio Corretjer, declared Puerto Rico a republic. Although the rebellion was quickly suppressed, it marked an important moment in Puerto Rican history, symbolizing the fight for autonomy and inspiring future movements for independence. Today, it is commemorated as a pivotal event in the island's struggle for self-determination.
