Grito de Lares (Revolution)
The Grito de Lares was an 1868 uprising in Puerto Rico where local residents, led by nationalist leaders, fought against Spanish colonial rule to gain independence. The revolt aimed to end Spanish control and establish self-governance, symbolizing Puerto Rican resistance. Although it was quickly suppressed and failed to achieve immediate independence, it became a powerful symbol of Puerto Rican identity and desire for autonomy. The uprising highlighted longstanding frustrations with colonial oppression and inspired future movements toward self-determination.
