Privacy Shield

Privacy Shield was a framework designed to facilitate the safe transfer of personal data from the European Union to the United States, ensuring that U.S. companies protecting EU citizens' privacy rights met certain standards. It arose after the EU's previous agreement, Safe Harbor, was invalidated. However, in July 2020, the European Court of Justice ruled that Privacy Shield was no longer valid due to concerns about U.S. surveillance practices and inadequate protections for EU data. As a result, organizations needed to seek alternative compliance methods for transferring personal data across the Atlantic.
